RE: 30 amp to 50 amp service

You won't find many (any) 50amp rigs with only one air conditioner.
Mine is 50 amp with one A/C.

RE: Cracks in Fiberglass shell near slide

The crack is indicative of stress that the shell itself could not absorb. This could be just a poor design issue and not a problem, or the frame itself could not be strong enough and it is flexing (stress) to a greater degree than was planned, consequently the shell has cracked. In reality, RVs are not subjected to much in the way of engineering. This is the manufacturers philosophy: Purchaser a frame from a vendor, and slap together a RV that looks good and people will hopefully buy. If there are problems, then hopefully there is enough profit to fund any warranty claims.
Having said all of that, this problem you noticed will not go away. Repairing the crack will not solve the underlying problem, and the crack will probably return. And other structural problems may return also.
I would not purchase this unit.

RE: Family Camping and Where to go

Saty away from the commercial campgrounds unless you are at a destination. The state parks and national parks are your best bet. Google state parks in your area, and for the national parks use www.nps.gov.

RE: GM Protection Plan

If GM does file for reorg, and the extended service plans and warranties are no longer valid, I can just stop payment and only be out a partial loss if the worst case happens…
Not necessarily true. The contract probably makes you liable for the full term and would be considered an account receivable or an assest that you would still owe as the company's assests are distributed to its creditors. As a warranty holder, you would be a creditor as well and the bankruptcy court could hold the warranty creditors as insolvent.
But, let me tell you, GM will not go into bankruptcy.

RE: GM Protection Plan

For you, this is a very bad investment. You drive the vehicle an average of 8800 miles per year. When the extended warranty expires, your vehicle will have 70400 mile on it. The liklyhood of a major problem in 70400 miles is nill. Save your $1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Do many of you snowbird in a TT?

I think it really makes no difference what other snowbirds do, unless of course one feels the need to just be one sheep in the flock and have no individuality. The real question is will your travel trailer work for you?
Heck, I know a snowbird couple who spend 4 months in a B van. They have to unhook everything to go to the store, and that little van is tiny. If everyone else was doing that, I still would not. It works for them, but not me!

RE: Wondering about next year

Staying home worrying about doom and gloom doesn't make much sense to me. Remember just 6 months ago the doom and gloom was fuel prices? People were selling their RVs because they could not afford the fuel. Wonder how they feel about that decision now? This doom and gloom will pass, too.

RE: Walmart Cheap Stuff?

On principal I don't shop at WalMart.
What "principal" is that?
I bet you shop at Target.
I bet you shop at Home Depot.
I bet you shop at Kohls.
I bet you shop at JC Penneys.
I bet you shop at Sears.
Every one of the stores mentioned above get lots of their merchadise from the same sources as Walmart, and they engage in the same pricing pressures with their suppliers and competitors.
Walmart- the store and company everyone loves to hate.
Walmart- the biggest retailer- they must be doing something right.

RE: Full time RVing and working

The Federal Government specifically disallows anyone working while obtaining a free RV site. Some Government sites may allow it anyway, but they are violating written regulations and could get into a problem with their respective district supervisors. How about listing your source for this? We did exactly that and our paid positions were for the very park that we were volunteer hosts for? And not only that, we did get a W-2 for the paid hours only and no 1099 or any other report on the RV site.
If such regulation exists, tell us where to find it.
I don't have the regulation, but in 4 National Parks where I have volunteered, I signed an agreement that neither me or anyone residing in the RV would work outside of the park for money. The form referred to the regulation. I guess I could find it, but the regulation is not the issue. Each park enforces rules as it fits their needs and satisfies the superintendent and the district office. My point is to be certain that if working outside the park is in your plans, then be sure to clarify it first. Don't assume it is allowed, because it just might not be!

RE: Why hand light water heater ?

I don't understand why my 89 mallard has an auto light gas heater and refrigerator but you have to go outside to light the water heater.
Because the water heater is not a DSI (direct spark ignition) model. What is so hard to understand about that?

RE: Buying in Canada

Do your homework on this one. If buying a new motor vehicle I think you will find the manufacturer will not honor the warranty. You may have some difficulty with your state's registration process. The vehicle may not have some obscure mandated US Federal Safety and/or EPA requirements that may prohibit you from licensing it in the US. I am just saying be careful and do your homework first so that you don't end up with a very expensive surprise.
I do recall some years ago when the exchange rate was very favorable to do what you are asking, the local TV reporter did a report on US citizens going to Canada solely to purchase a motor vehicle to import into the US and they were very surprised to find no manufacturer's warranty.

Remember when?

Remember when gas and diesel prices were $4 and $5 per gallon? People were selling their RV's, and tow vehicles because they could no longer afford to put fuel in them. Of course, just 5 months later and all is well again. I feel sorry for those people who bailed out of RVing at a substantial loss, and now fuel prices are lower than they have been in years.
Now, the stock market is in the toilet, and a lot of our retirement money has vanished. The economy continues to tank, and now people are posting that they are not RVing because of the economy. Sure it is bad, but it will get better. Maybe not as quick as the fuel prices recovered, but it will recover as well.
My point is that we MUST mantain a forward thinking personal policy to prevent severe financial losses. If we only look at the here and now financially, then we will always loose. Sure, maybe some adjustments to the financial plan as outside influences change, but knee jerk reactions are a sure bet to financial disaster.

RE: Uniroyal Laredo tires for 5ver - what's your experience?

My trailer came from the factory with Uniroyals Light Truck tires. I have no complaints and they have held up very well. They will be 4 years old this spring and show no cracking or tire wear for that matter. I did have them balanced, however.

RE: Chrysler asks for bailout, gives bonuses....

I have little worry about GM, Ford, or Chrsler going into bankruptcy. The Democrat party will yield to union pressure to keep these companies afloat. There is much merit in keeping these companies alive, and while it makes very good rheteric to say let them die and teach them a lesson, there are just too many people, working and retired, dependent upon these companies. Actually, it just might be cheaper to loan them, maybe even give them, the money than to pay the benefits and medical for the masses of unemployed. Then add the taxes that these new unemployed will not be paying, and the cost is very high, indeed. I am so convinced of the survival of the American automobile industry that I just bought 200 shares of GM at what I believe will ultimately be a deep discount.

RE: How cold can it be before I HAVE to winterize?

Water freezes at 32. Atlanta will have a hard freeze tonight with temps below 32 for 5 hours or more. Unless your RV is heated, you will have some broken water pipes if not winterized.
